A New Direction
We are moving in a new direction with the website! Almost one year after I created this site and with three blog posts, here’s what’s up:
November 2023, I was in real need of community, specifically the Concussion Community. Long story short (for now), I’ve been experiencing the repercussions of multiple concussions for the past five/six years. Thus, with my social anxiety and lack of social media, I turned to books. I read one book I thought might help; it turned out to be about something completely different, though I did come out of it with more empathy for medical practitioners (even if they lack the empathy in turn or don’t have the space to be vulnerable–totally understandable).
Then I figured to actually look up some books on concussions. [The thought process to get here could be ascribed to my stubbornness to I don’t know what, but also concussion-brain.] I ordered two books, and one got lost in the mail.
I struck a fist in the air as "Impact: Women Writing After Concussion" (2021) arrived on my doorstep.
[If I was going to buy from A to Z, I was going to buy used. Back in college, I bought and rented used books whenever they were offered and haven’t not been able to get through a book due to “damage.” So it’s always a pleasant surprise to receive a book with letters and dedications.
To Shannon and Kaylie: I wish you both a healthy life moving forward and a community that gives you the space to feel. <3 from a fellow concussed sister.]
I started reading "Impact" on December 8th and have since felt joy, love, sadness, unity, strength, resilience, anger, and much more. I have transformed, and I wish this book had come sooner in my concussion journey. Writing this draft, with eight chapters left, I have decided to pay it forward: the solace of editors E.D. Morin & Jane Cathorne with 21 writers.
'Mother Web' will be my “recovery” process from concussion/Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Chronicling how the state and health of my brain have been impacted and continue to: I shall share anecdotes, what has worked/works for me, and responses to the writers of “Impact”.
This doesn’t mean that I won’t share my art, however. Just as the contributors of Impact were all writers prior to concussion and have continued to contribute to the literary world, I shall continue my life as an artist and writer–even if my breaks in between blog posts seem like I’ve stopped.
Much love,
